Week 9

In this week’s session, we began by beginning to look for images which would inspire the ending of our dance. We stumbled across an imagine, which can be seen below, which showed some individuals wearing straight jackets. We did some research and found that this was a common method used in order to restrain people in the mental asylum. We began to think about some movement we could perform with our arms behind our back. We thought it would be a good idea to repeat some phrases which we had already used earlier in the piece to show the contrast between the use of arms as it would make it more obvious to the audience what we were trying to show. We decided to change up the formations in order to use the whole space and make the piece more interesting due to the use of travel. We also added some partner work between house holds due to us believing it would show us helping one another. Us showing our need for help shows how the individuals in the mental asylum need help in order to become ‘better’.

After we created this, we had to perform our piece to the rest of the class. The performance went well overall except the new ending needs to be cleaned. I was given some feedback to work on my facial expressions in order to help me stay in character. I really enjoyed watching the other groups perform their choreography as it allows me to see their progress and inspire me to work harder.

In this session I believe we made a lot of progress as we have almost finished the piece. Now the aim for next lesson is to clean the piece by going through it slowly, making sure that everyone is doing every step the same way.

  1. I really enjoyed watching your choreography and your characterisation and development of the execution of your movement as you repeated it throughout your piece was really effective. What challenges did you face when choreographing the section without using your arms and how difficult was it to be creative, whilst also doing movements that were possible without such an important element?

    1. I found the part without arms very difficult as not only are a lot of steps harder to do without arms but most movement is led by the arms therefore it was a challenge for us. We thought about leading movements from different parts of the body such as the head and the chest which helped us a lot.

  2. I love how you have included the repetition of previous movement to contrast with this section, I feel this will be very effective and powerful. What kind of emotions do you aim to bring with this section? What is it that you are trying to get the audience to feel?

    1. I want the audience to feel a sense of empathy towards us. As if we are trapped inside the straight jacket. We will do this by using our facial expressions and focus in order to move the audience into feeling a sense of guilt for us.

  3. I really like the way you use images to be inspired for movement this is a really interesting task. Do you find doing this effective and helpful?
Also, after performing your choreography did you feel like this helped with knowing personally what needs more work without been given the feedback from others?

    1. I do find that using images to create movement is effective. It is a quick way to create movement which correlates to my stimulus. I think that performing the piece to our peers always helps to clarify on what needs working on in our piece. It also helps me feel within myself when performing what works for me and what doesn't. For example, i can feel myself sometimes slip out of character therefore i have given myself the target of working on this in the lessons to come.
