Week 8
In this week’s session, our main focus was to create an
entrance to the piece. We decided it would be a good idea to add a more minimal
entrance to the beginning of the piece so that the choreography does not reach
its climax near the start of the piece. We referred back to our stimuli of the corridor
which led us to begin standing in a line one behind the other towards the
audience. We thought this would portray that we are stood in said corridor due
to us being in a precise line. We also began to think deeper into what the
parallel line could show. We came up with the idea of how it shows the loss of
individuality and freedom, like individuals who are put into a mental asylum,
due to us all repeating the same movements at the same time. We decided that we
would start with small and slow movements which would eventually grow and
become bigger to show distress and create a creepy mood for the audience. I
referred back to Kate Flatt’s book which encouraged me to really think about
the mood set for the audience in the beginning of our choreography.
To create the small movements we used a method which we were shown before in class. We looked at the photo of the corridor and each thought of a word we would use to describe the feeling they got from the image. Then individually we thought of two movements to show this word. We then came together to learn each movement and numbered them. We then rolled a die in order to create the order of the movements. Once we had this short phrase , we added choreographic devices such as repetition to make the movement more interesting and eye catching for the audience.
Overall, in this class i believe that me and my group made a lot of progress. I think we are doing well to keep on track with the idea of the stimulus due to it being easy to lose sight of what the piece is about. Next session i believe we should create an ending to the piece so that then we can keep rehearsing in order for the choreography to be clean and to make sure we know it well.
I feel as though this will be a really powerful entrance for the audience and the meaning and intention behind it means that the atmosphere you want to create is clear. What kind of words inspired your movement and did you find this method to be effective for this section of your choreography?
ReplyDeleteSome words i thought of was trapped and alone. I find this method an effective way to create movement and i enjoyed doing this task with my peers.
DeleteI enjoyed reading your developing thoughts and ideas in this blog and can tell your piece is starting to come together! It was interesting how you have decided to start at a slower pace to help enhance the climax. Will there be other calmer moments in your piece? If so, when will they be used?
ReplyDeleteWe decided that the dance should alternate between slow and fast sections. This will seem unexpected to the audience therefore the contrast will catch their attention.
DeleteThis is a very detailed blog and I enjoyed reading it. I can really see your ideas developing along with your choreography. How did you find focusing on the entrance? And by developing this has it made the initial impact you wanted to achieve?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed working on the beginning because in my opinion the beginning is the most important as it sets the feeling for the audience. We aimed for the beginning to really engage the audience and cause them to feel creeped out. I do believe we have achieved this with the new beginning to our dance.
