Week 5
In week 5’s lesson we looked closely into Kate Phlatt’s book which is named Choreography: creating and developing dance for performance. The book encouraged us to look think about the beginning and end of our piece. Mainly how we want to make the audience feel as soon as we step on stage and the last thing, we want the audience to see. We discussed about creating a creepy start where one person begins on stage as the rest of the group creepily walk in making eye contact with the audience. We also discussed the use of choreographic devices which we may use within the piece. For example, we want to use retrograde and cannon within a section of our piece to create an unpredictable and frantic piece which links back to the stimulus.
After this group discussion we were given the task to come up with some words which linked to the stimulus. We came up with words such as frantic and isolated. We then had to individually come up with some gestures which went with our selected word. We had to make sure that the gestural phrase was short and small so that they could be enlarged to create a captivating phrase of movement. Once we had come up with some small gestures, we taught the group them and worked together to expand them. We also added some choreographic devices to some of them to make them more interesting to watch.
Overall, I really enjoyed this week’s task as it allowed us to think more deeply into the audience’s perception of the piece. I also liked how, in the movement task, we were able to create our own movement individually as well as work as a group. I believe it allows each individual to add their own style into the piece.
The links to the movement we created are below.
The gestures that you have created are all very engaging and I can see how they link closely to the eerie and frightening mood of your piece. You discussed how you want you piece to have a haunting entrance to set the intense atmosphere, would you like this to continue right to the end, or would you like some moments of calm and release?
ReplyDeleteI think there should be some moments of calm and release to show a contrast and keep the movement engaging to the audience. If the movement was all very intense all the way through i believe it would lose its impact and become a little boring for the audience.
DeleteI really like the theme of having a creepy beginning, do you believe this will capture the audiences grip? You have also mentioned you used selected words to create your gestures, I really enjoyed watching these, maybe next time include the words linking to the gestures.
ReplyDeleteOur main focus for the beginning is for the audience to be engaged as soon as we step on stage. We will do this by including the sharp and intense movements as well as using our facial expressions in order to portray our character to the audience.
DeleteYou have included good detail on what happened during your lesson. I like how you have also included videos to support your progress. You have commented on the way you would like to start your piece, have you any ideas on how you would like to finish it? What is the overall message and emotions you want the audience to be left with?
ReplyDeleteWe haven’t yet thought about how we will finish the piece. Our main focus at the moment is to really engage the audience with the beginning of our dance in order for them to stay engaged for the full 10 minutes of the piece. I want the audience to feel creeped out by the piece but also have a sense of sympathy towards us in the soft and release section of the piece.
