Choreo week 4
In today’s lesson we had to come into class with a stimulus for our assessment piece. As a group we found a picture of this dark hallway which can be seen below.
This gave our group the idea of basing the piece of an asylum. We discussed different ideas we had which would clearly show the audience this idea. For example, we talked about having a section of mostly stillness with small twitches of the head and arms in correlation to the music. We believed this could give an eerie ambience similarly to the picture shown above. After discussing this we had to share with the class our ideas. I enjoyed sharing with the class as the other students inputted their opinions and thoughts of what we had come up with. It also gave us a chance to hear the other group’s stimuli which was interesting to listen to.
As a group we came up with some words which fit with our idea. We then split off into two smaller groups and came up with 2 small phrases inspired by the words we had discussed. Some words such as trapped, unpredictable and isolated were used. An example of how we interpreted the word trapped was performing a reach forwards to the audience as if to ask help to escape. Once we had created these small phrases we joined back into the original group and taught eachother what we had come up with. We changed parts we didn’t think fit or didn’t work as we joined each of the phrases together.
Overall, I really enjoyed this lesson as it allowed us to work as a group to create movement as well as slowly work towards creating the assessment piece. My favourite part about the lesson was hearing about the other group’s ideas and stimuli as I found it interesting.
Some links for the phrases which were created are shown below

The way in which you have used the previous task of finding words to inspire your movement has been really effective and I think that all of your motifs are really interesting and powerful. What kind of choreographic devices or dynamics might you consider in order for these small phrases to have the maximum impact on the audience?
ReplyDeleteI think our piece will need a variety of dynamics in order to create contrast. This will link to our stimulus as the patients in a mental asylum are often unpredictable. This will also help catch the audience's attention.
DeleteYour blog is detailed and explain the tasks completed in the lesson really well. The fact you have included your own opinion makes me see how you found the task. What feedback was given from your peers? Are you going to take on board the feedback if yes how?
ReplyDeleteI received many positive aspects of feedback from my peers on how our idea was a good inspiration of movement. We were also given some further ideas on our stimulus. Nathan gave us the idea of looking into methods of torture used. This will definitely be a thing my group looks into.
DeleteI can see you and your group have been thinking very carefully about how you will express your stimulus. It is great to read that you have already started thinking of potential movement to support your forming ideas.
ReplyDeleteHave you any thoughts on how you could express a hallway through the use of group patterning?
Thankyou. We thought about how a line could show us in the corridor as being one behind another and not stepping out shows us being surrounded by the walls of the corridor and almost a sense of being trapped.
